6/6/2007 Chase

Tuesday started out with a long drive and ended the same way.  Danni and I made our way back to Denver from Steamboat Springs after Joe kept us updated on the 2% Tornado Risk over all of NE CO.  We made a quick stop at home and headed out to Byers around 1400hrs to meet up with Joe and Melissa.  A Severe T-Storm watch box was in place for 14 counties in NE CO including Denver and extending well into WY.  We arrived in Byers sometime around 1500hrs to find blue sky, temps in the low 80s, juicey dews in the 50s and a strong SSE wind of about 10-20.  We hung out for a while and watched a storm in South Denver moving our way; we decided to change positions and moved about 10 miles South of Byers to wait for it.

South of Byers the storm passes to our North still getting organized.  This storm was the only player in town so we committed to it and made our way North.

We stopped at County Road 181 & County Road 38 when Joe's Mobile Threat showed a "Spinny Disk" and over 80kt shear due West of our location.   We stopped for a minute to watch but saw nothing of tornadic intrest.  We continued East to Deertrail and kept close to it's South side.

The storm was moving ENE so we shot North out of Deertrail to Highway 36, we traveled East for several miles where we stopped to watch.  The storm had great inflow from the SE and there was some obvious spin in the storm.

The storm was Severe Warned at this point although we saw nothing except high DBZ that would indicate such.  The storm began to die and recover several times and we moved on to Last Chance to stay with it.

Melissa & Danni checking out Doppler returns in Last Chance.  The storm was mainly just a tease at this point, out of maily hope that something would break loose we continued further East to observe.

Halfway between Anton & Akron on Highway 63 the T-Storm Warning was allowed to expire and a Flash Flood Warning was issued for heavy rain fall.  Once again other than on the radar there was no sign of flooding rain fall from the storm.  We decided to call the chase at this point, the radar showed a lot of weakening and the updraft was slowly getting rained out.

Here we see Joe showing us the inflow winds and getting an eye injury from the dust.  Shortly after this photo we blazed South on various county roads to I-70 and headed to Denny's in Limon for some supper.  Our dining experience combined a druged out server, over all bad service and about half our dinner order being wrong.  That combined with a 300 mile bust made for one of those "why do we even chase anymore days" but hopefully our next one will answer that for us.
