Saturday's Chase - Big Bust

Saturday afternoon proved to be a very long drive for not a whole lot of action... where we were. We left Denver around 1445hrs and made the tough choice of heading SE instead of NE. At the time we left there was a Tornado Warned storm near Yuma and more cells were going up along I-76 and southward to I-70. With this in mind we wanted to get into the good dew points and since it looked like a line forming, being on the S end would be best. This was the active MCD at the time we left home.

A Tornado Watch was issued quickly for SE CO and the probabilities were great, Probability of Tornadoes (High >95%), Probability of Strong Tornadoes (Moderate 30%). We went S to Colorado Springs and then booked E on Highway 94 to Pumpkin Center. Once were there we could see the line that was building to our east, some decent updrafts were there but there was an obvious cap in place. Still thinking good things, we continued E to Kit Carson where we fueled up and took a peak at the news. A Tornado Warning was in place to our S and two Tornadoes had been seen by the public in Campo & La Junta. Storm motion was ENE at 45mph so we continued S to Eads, the plan was to continue E from there to Sheridan Lake and catch the back side of the storm as it passed by. Now for the bad news... Another cell in Springfield (S of our storm) sprung up and went Tornado Warned, this was now the charlie storm and ours quikly died. Having to be back in Denver in the morning we cut our losses and headed home.

We were shocked to see that the Torn Watch was still in place as we were leaving. Aside from the frist line that formed and moved into KS, there was nothing but light showers that came through later... even with such a great set up.

The storm report says it all, only one official Tornado report came out of CO Saturday and it was from the storm to our S that died when it got to us. As you can see, once the line left CO it did nothing Tornadic in KS either. So we took a nice 450 mile afternoon drive for little more than light rain showers. Isn't storm chasing fun!
