Monday's Chase Report

A Tornado Watch was issued as we were leaving home around 1430hrs for all of the metro area into the NE plains. Probabilities were 50% for tornadoes and 20% for strong tornadoes. We started by playing on the south end of the cyclone in western Elbert County. Several storms fired but never got organized, they quickly died as they traveled N into Arapahoe County. One storm showed some potential as it came out of Teller/El Paso County and moved NE over us. It was the only player in town at the time so we followed it N to the Arapahoe/Elbert line where it collapsed. Due E of us around Kiowa a new cell had gone up with a decent updraft. We flew N into Bennett and then E toward Deertrail where the storm went Severe Warned.

A few miles W of Deertrail we ran into the precip core and punched through heavy rain & quarter size hail. Once we were clear of the core we had a great view of the updraft located over Deertrail, jumped off of I-70 and this is what it looked like.

Tight rotation began on the SW corner of the storm near a small RFD notch. No funnel was visible but the rotation was promising so we traveled N of I-70 to watch.

Half way between I-70 & HWY 36 we stopped and got some photos and video. The storm was moving NE at about 15mph and was getting rained / hailed out as it moved into Washington & Morgan Counties.

We continued N to HWY36 and watched the storm intensify then weaken again. The sun was already setting and very cold air had pushed into the area, we called the chase in Eastern Adams County and headed home. After night fall the storm was Tornado Warned as it moved into the Yuma area, however there were no reports of a tornado or damage. Mean while in TX Joe & Larry nearly got blown from the road by an F-3 stove pipe that "snuck up" on Joe and his mobile radar. The tornado continued to harass them and other chasers throughout the evening. I'll post video if Joe is kind enough to share later.
