Friday's Chase

Friday's outlook was a bit of a shock for me, I had been in class all week and not really giving much focus to wx.  Needless to say when I saw ECO in a Moderate Risk area and such high Tornado probabilities, it was a "pack your bags" kind of day.  My first concern was temperatures, in the metro we were only sitting in the mid 50's but it was 61 in Limon and warmer the further ESE you went.  Denver was socked in with light rain showers and very little sunlight, while Limon and points East were getting lots of direct sun & heating.  Wind shear was down right insane and CAPE values in the area were around 1300.  I waited around home for a while reading some other chaser's opinions about the day and discussing tactics with Joe, my link to radar for the chase.  Nothing was going on other than light rain in the metro all afternoon, when suddenly a cell sprung to life near Bennett and the SPC issued a MCD for the area.  At that point I was gone in 3 minutes.

I made great time and caught up to the SW end of the Bennett storm which was looking okay.  The storm was moving almost due North and started to form a line with pops to the South, with this occuring I shot East on I-70.  East of Deertrail I caught several short periods of HP and very high winds before pushing  thruogh it and landing in Limon.  It was sunny to the east and socked in to the West so I continued on to Genoa.

This was the Tornado Watch for NE CO, 40% chance of tornadoes, 10% chance of strong tornadoes.

I jumped off the interstate in Genoa and looked back at a new cell over Limon, the updraft was just exploding and a very well defined base was taking shape.  I continued on to Bovina and saw that the storm was moving more N-NE and would not pass over me, I turned around and went back to Genoa to follow it North.

Several miles N of Genoa the updraft was still exploding upward with very rapid rotation, the storm was developing an inflow tail and the base continued to lower.

I took this shot looking due North a little less than a mile from the lowering, my position was just East of the inflow and directly under the expanding anvil.  There was mild rotation in the lowering and it continued to get more defined.

Following the storm North the base became very low to the ground and some scud was being pulled from the fields into it, at this point the NWS still had not warned the storm.

Looking due West at a cell moving from the Deertrail area toward Lastchance, this storm was Tornado warned and producing funnels.  A breif Tornado was also reported with this cell NW of Lastchance and caused no damage.  I decided to stay with my storm since I was under it and getting into better conditions within the Tornado Watch box.

The base on my storm died as quickly as it formed as the larger storm to the WNW took stole its energy.  I stayed with it a little longer hoping that it would come back to life, but it never did.  I continued on to Lastchance (still tornado warned) and met up with the storm base that had produced the funnels.  Several other chasers and 9News were at the intersection of Highway 71 & Highway 36 but the storm had done all it was going to do.  BOU allowed the Tornado Warning to expire since the  storm was getting weak.  With the sun going down I called the chase and headed home on 36 with a very nice CG show from a cell near Cedar Point.  During this time a cell SW of Limon produced a Tornado which also caused no damage.  Several other storms went Tornado Warned near the Yuma area but no official reports were made.

A supercell in South Western KS was doing major damage during this time also.  The town of Greensberg took a nearly direct hit by a large, long track wedge tornado.  Some chasers reported it to be nearly two miles wide.
